Melissa Nelson is a Lecturer and Faculty Advisor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of North Texas. She serves as a key academic leader, advising undergraduate students and overseeing initiatives like the Anthropology Undergraduate Community Coordinator role (since 2023). Her academic journey includes a B.S. in Neuroscience and Behavioral Biology from Emory University (2001), an M.A. with Distinction in Anthropology from the University of Manchester (UK, 2004), and a second M.A. from the University of Virginia (2008), where she was recognized for teaching excellence by the Seven Society.
Her research focuses on identity negotiations, diasporic cultures, and migration experiences. Notable projects include analyzing the commodification of Scottish kilt authenticity and studying return migration patterns among Greek women. She actively engages with her own diasporic background (Nicaraguan/Mexican in the U.S.) to inform her teaching philosophy, emphasizing critical perspectives on identity. Since 2014, she has taught diverse undergraduate courses, including ethnographic field methods and social media culture through a Foucaultian lens.
Recipient of multiple awards, including the 2023 NACADA Advising Excellence award, she leads campus initiatives like the PADAWAN Society (since 2018), CLASS Ambassadors (since 2018), and the BIPOC Collective (since 2022). She speaks Spanish, English, and has beginning conversational Greek.
