معرفی
Melissa Knauert, MD, PhD is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Pulmonary, Critical Care & Sleep Medicine department at Yale School of Medicine. She serves as Program Director for the Critical Care Medicine Fellowship and treats critically ill patients in the medical intensive care unit at Yale New Haven Hospital. Dr. Knauert is also the director of the Knauert Lab, which focuses on sleep and circadian disruption in critically ill patients.
Dr. Knauert received her MD and PhD degrees from Yale School of Medicine. She completed her internal medicine residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and pulmonary, critical care, and sleep fellowships at Yale University School of Medicine. Her educational background includes a ScB in Biochemistry from Brown University (1996).
Dr. Knauert's research focuses on acute sleep deprivation in the ICU, atypical ICU sleep, and circadian disruption in critically ill patients. Her work demonstrates how sleep and circadian abnormalities contribute to ICU delirium and broader physiological perturbations affecting cardiovascular, immune, endocrine, and metabolic systems. She has conducted innovative studies using ambulatory polysomnography in medical ICUs, developed interventions like the "Naptime" clustered care protocol, and examined EEG atypia in relation to patient outcomes.
Analysis of Dr. Knauert's recent publications (2022-2025) reveals a consistent focus on the intersection of sleep science, circadian biology, and critical care medicine. Her work spans methodology development (actigraphy data processing), clinical interventions (daytime bright light therapy), observational studies (circadian rhythms in ICU), and theoretical frameworks for understanding sleep deficiency's impact on health outcomes. A notable trend is her increasing focus on chrononutrition and gender differences in circadian function.

Dr. Knauert has secured significant research funding including R21 NR011066, P20 NR014126, P30 AG021342, KL2 TR000140, and K23 HL138229 grants. She serves as Sub Investigator for the "Effects of circadian regulation and sleep on immune responses" clinical trial (HIC ID 2000027037). Her research collaborations include frequent work with Henry Yaggi, Brienne Miner, Taylor Intihar, and Nancy Schmieder Redeker.
The Knauert Lab conducts patient-oriented research at the intersection of sleep, circadian biology, and critical illness. Current projects include examining circadian rhythms in ICU using continuous heart rate monitoring, studying the influence of light on circadian rhythms, and conducting randomized controlled trials of daytime bright light therapy. The lab aims to develop interventions that improve ICU outcomes through better sleep and circadian alignment.
