Professor Melissa Hamilton is a Senior Lecturer in Law and Criminal Justice at the University of Surrey. She holds a Juris Doctor and PhD in Criminal Justice from the University of Texas at Austin. Her research focuses on interdisciplinary issues including domestic violence, trauma responses to assault, policing strategies, sentencing practices, and the ethical use of AI in criminal justice systems. She is affiliated with the State Bar of Texas and the American Psychological Association.
Her publications critique algorithmic bias in criminal justice decision-making and advocate for transparency in AI tools. Recent work includes analyses of pretrial detention models and the societal impacts of risk assessment practices. Dr. Hamilton also engages in public discourse on legal issues, such as her appearance on the Thinkwing Radio show discussing Second Amendment interpretations and gun policy.
