Melissa Gianferrari is a tenured Professor of Photographic Restoration at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna since 2021, specializing in photography techniques and conservation within the Department of Restoration – Library and Archive Material. Her career spans over two decades of hands-on restoration work and academic instruction focused exclusively on photographic heritage.
Her educational foundation includes:
- Diploma in cultural heritage restoration from Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence (Drawings and Prints department, 2002)
- Specialization in photography restoration at Fratelli Alinari (Florence) and Bibliothèque Nationale de France (Paris)
- Graduation in Technologies for Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage from University of Tuscia
Her research centers on photographic material science and preservation methodologies, with particular expertise in film degradation mechanisms, historical photographic processes, and digital print conservation. Gianferrari actively bridges theoretical knowledge with practical conservation through extensive work on cellulose acetate negatives, instant photography materials, and transparent supports, emphasizing the dual nature of photographs as both physical artifacts and historical documents.
