Melissa Friedling is an Associate Professor of Filmmaking and Director of the Graduate Program at The New School, affiliated with the Schools of Public Engagement and Parsons School of Design. She holds a Ph.D. in Rhetorical Studies from the University of Iowa. Her work bridges media art, writing, and education, focusing on marginalized narratives within found media. Friedling’s research explores media archeology, experimental film practices, and environmental media, with exhibitions at venues like the Barbican Center and Tribeca Film Festival. She has received grants from NYFA, NYSCA, and fellowships from MacDowell and Yaddo.
Her teaching emphasizes critical engagement with film traditions and technical mastery, offering courses like 16mm Filmmaking and Animating Resistance. Recent publications include Pareidolic Cinemas (2024) and The feral film habit of OJOBOCA (2023). Upcoming courses in 2025-2026 include Re/Lab: Re-emergent Media and Thesis Supervision.
