Professor Melissa Castan serves as Director of the Castan Centre for Human Rights Law at Monash University's Faculty of Law, bringing over 25 years of expertise in Australian Public Law, Constitutional Law, Human Rights, and Indigenous Legal Issues. Currently an Associate Dean (Staffing) and Academic Board member, she teaches International Human Rights Law, Constitutional Law, and Indigenous Rights while supervising PhD candidates.
Her research centers on the practical implementation of human rights frameworks across Australian legal systems, with particular focus on Indigenous constitutional recognition, child protection governance, and mental health law. Recent work examines real-time rights-based recordkeeping in child welfare systems and the constitutional implications of establishing an Indigenous Voice to Parliament, bridging theoretical legal analysis with tangible policy impact.
Recent publications reveal consistent engagement with evolving human rights challenges, particularly the intersection of digital governance and children's rights, constitutional reform for First Nations peoples, and applying international human rights standards to domestic mental health systems. Her scholarship demonstrates strong translational impact through judicial citations and policy development.
Professor Castan actively contributes to legal discourse through leadership roles including National Convenor of the Alternative Law Journal and Victorian Law Foundation Board membership. She hosts the 'Case in Point' podcast and has led significant research projects such as the ARC-funded real-time recordkeeping governance study (2020-2025) and the Traditional Owner Settlement Act evaluation against UNDRIP standards.
As Director of the Castan Centre for Human Rights Law, she oversees a dynamic research hub producing the Alternative Law Journal, hosting annual conferences, and driving initiatives like the 'Human Rights Teaching - National Engagement Workshop'. The Centre serves as a nexus for academic research, policy advocacy, and public education on human rights issues in Australia and internationally.
