Dr. Melissa Andrew is a Professor in the Division of Geriatric Medicine at Dalhousie University's Faculty of Medicine, with joint appointments in the Department of Medicine and Department of Community Health and Epidemiology. She holds advanced degrees including an MD from Dalhousie, an MSc Public Health from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, and a PhD focused on social vulnerability in older adults.
Her research focuses on frailty, social vulnerability, vaccinology, and dementia. As an Associate Member of the Canadian Center for Vaccinology, she investigates how frailty impacts vaccine effectiveness. She also leads dementia-related studies through the Canadian Consortium on Neurodegeneration in Aging (CCNA), examining social context's role in neurodegenerative diseases.
Dr. Andrew collaborates with primary care and social gerontology teams to study care models' impact on older adults' health and quality of life. She actively contributes to public health initiatives, serving on Canada’s National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) and the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia’s Research Advisory Committee.
Her recent work includes global influenza surveillance networks and trials evaluating interventions like far-UVC light in long-term care settings. She has published extensively on pandemic response strategies, caregiver experiences, and the intersection between personality traits and cognitive health in aging populations.
