Dr. Melis Sutman is a Senior Lecturer in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Edinburgh, specializing in sustainable geostructures and geothermal energy integration. She joined the university in April 2024 following postdoctoral research at EPFL.
Her qualifications include:
- PhD in Geotechnical Engineering (Virginia Tech, 2016)
- MSc in Geotechnical Engineering (Virginia Tech, 2012)
- BSc in Civil Engineering (Bogazici University, 2010)
Her research develops thermo-hydro-mechanical frameworks for energy geostructures—innovative systems combining structural support with geothermal heat exchange. Current investigations examine soil-structure interface behavior under thermal loading, non-isothermal soil mechanics, and sustainable material applications.
Publications establish advanced laboratory protocols for soil testing, numerical models for energy pile design, and fundamental principles of thermal effects on soil mechanics. She received the 2023 ISSMGE Bright Spark Award for exceptional contributions to energy geotechnics.
