Melina R. Kibbe, MD, is the James Carroll Flippin Professor of Medical Science, Dean of the University of Virginia School of Medicine, and Chief Health Affairs Officer at UVA Health. She holds joint appointments in Surgery and Biomedical Engineering. Her research focuses on vascular disease therapies, nanomedicine, and promoting sex inclusivity in biomedical research. Dr. Kibbe leads the Kibbe-Tsihlis Lab and is co-founder/CMO of VesselTek BioMedical, developing vascular medical devices.
Education: MD from University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine (1994), B.S. Biology (1990). Surgical training includes residencies at University of Pittsburgh (General Surgery) and Northwestern University (Vascular Surgery).
Research Interests: Developing novel therapies for vascular diseases such as peripheral artery disease and abdominal aortic aneurysms. Key areas include nanofiber drug delivery systems, targeted therapies, and sex-based research design. She has over 10 patents and pioneered early nanomedicine approaches for atherosclerosis.
Leadership & Awards: Member of the National Academy of Medicine (2016), recipient of the Presidential Early Career Award (2009), and Editor-in-Chief of JAMA Surgery. Advocates for gender equity in clinical trials and surgical leadership roles.
