Melina Meyer Magulas serves as a Research Fellow and PhD candidate in physical activity and health at the Department of Sport Medicine, Norwegian School of Sport Sciences (NIH). Her primary research focuses on breaking sedentary time with physical activity and its impact on cardio-metabolic and cardiovascular disease risk factors through the Generation Sedentary project. With extensive professional experience, she previously coordinated the physiological testing laboratory at Magnat Center in Oslo and has worked over 15 years as an instructor, personal trainer, and strength conditioning coach.
Magulas earned her Master's degree in Sports Physiology and Biomechanics from NIH in 2014, specializing in long-term stretching training effects on the muscle-tendon unit system. Her educational background directly informs her current research trajectory in biomechanical adaptations.
Her research interests span sedentary behavior interruption strategies, cardio-metabolic risk modification, and muscle-tendon biomechanics, with particular emphasis on how stretching patterns alter tissue morphology and function. This work bridges clinical physiology and practical public health applications, examining both general populations and specialized groups like ballet dancers. Her methodology integrates physiological testing with longitudinal activity monitoring to establish dose-response relationships.
Analysis of her publications reveals consistent investigation into mechanical loading effects on the triceps surae complex. The 2021 study demonstrates structural adaptations to static stretching, while the 2018 ballet dancer research identifies specialized tissue properties developed through sport-specific loading. Both works contribute to understanding how targeted physical interventions modify tissue behavior and systemic health markers.
Professionally, Magulas combines academic work with practical application: she served as course responsible for Physiology and Anatomy II (FYB1200) in physiotherapy education during 2022/23, lectures at the Academy for Personal Training, and previously taught nutrition for dancers at Bårdar Academy. Her 15+ years as a speaker and coach provide real-world context to her research on activity-sedentary transitions.
