Melbourne J. Schriver, PhD, is a Professor of Chemistry and Program Coordinator at Crandall University, where he has served since 1996. Prior to this, he held academic positions at Dalhousie University, Saint Mary’s University, and Memorial University of Newfoundland, where he was awarded tenure and promotion. His research focuses on the synthesis of novel small molecules, particularly those with reactive pi bonds in ring structures, with current emphasis on derivatives of 1,3,4-oxathiazol-2-one as potential tuberculosis treatments.
Dr. Schriver earned a BSc (Hons) and PhD in Chemistry from the University of New Brunswick. He teaches courses including Organic Chemistry, Christianity and Natural Science, and Physics. He has published over 30 peer-reviewed articles in prestigious journals such as Acta Crystallographica and Inorganic Chemistry, and has been recognized with awards including the Steven & Ella Steeves Faculty Award for Excellence in Research (2009) and multiple Research Grants from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).
His work integrates advanced crystallography and synthetic methodologies, often involving undergraduate students in collaborative research projects. He has received grants supporting projects such as the synthesis of novel sulfur-containing compounds and studies on reaction mechanisms in inorganic systems.
