Allen Oliver is a Research Professor and Director of the Molecular Structure Facility in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Notre Dame, College of Science. He plays a central role in advancing structural chemistry research through X-ray crystallography, supporting both internal and external researchers.

Dr. Oliver's research focuses on inorganic chemistry, crystallography, and materials science, with applications in coordination chemistry, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), actinide clusters, and organometallic synthesis. His expertise in X-ray crystallography enables precise determination of molecular and extended structures, contributing to drug development, catalysis, and energy materials. He leads a core facility that trains students and provides structural analysis services using state-of-the-art instrumentation.
His recent publications span actinide chemistry, luminescent materials, nanoclusters, and synthetic methodology, reflecting a strong trend toward functional materials with applications in sensing, energy, and nuclear science. The work often involves heterobimetallic systems, redox control, and structural design of novel coordination environments.

He directs the Molecular Structure Facility, which houses three single-crystal and one powder diffractometer, supported by high-magnification microscopes and access to the Cambridge and Inorganic Crystal Structure Databases. The facility collaborates closely with the Magnetic Resonance Research Center, Mass Spectrometry & Proteomics Facility, and Materials Characterization Facility for comprehensive compound characterization.
