Melba Joyce Boyd is a Distinguished University Professor and Chair of the Department of Africana Studies at Wayne State University. She also holds an Adjunct Professor position in the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies at the University of Michigan, where she earned her Doctor of Arts in English (1979). She previously held faculty roles at the University of Iowa, Ohio State University, and served as Director of the African American Studies Program at the University of Michigan—Flint.

Her research focuses on African American literature, poetry, and film, with a strong emphasis on biographical and critical analyses of Black cultural figures. She has authored nine poetry collections and 65 essays, edited the African American Life series at Wayne State University Press, and produced films exploring Black artistic and historical narratives. Her work has received multiple accolades, including awards from the Library of Michigan and the Black Caucus of the American Library Association.
