Melanie Spero is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Oregon's College of Arts and Sciences. Her research investigates pathogen physiology in host environments, focusing on how bacteria adapt during chronic infections to develop antibiotic tolerance and biofilms. Her work targets therapeutic innovations for infections like those in cystic fibrosis and wound healing.
Spero's lab employs molecular, genetic, and imaging techniques to study bacterial survival mechanisms, such as the role of heat-shock proteases and metabolic pathways in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Her recent studies explore chlorate-based therapies to disrupt anaerobic respiration in biofilms.
