Dr. Melanie Shoffner is a Professor in the Department of Middle, Secondary & Mathematics Education at James Madison University's College of Education. She specializes in English language arts education, focusing on reflective practice, teacher dispositions, and international educational studies. Her roles include editing English Education journal and serving on the IFTE Advisory Board. Dr. Shoffner holds a PhD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, an MAT from Duke University, and a BA in English and History from Duke.
Her research emphasizes preservice teacher development through reflective practices and international experiences. Notable works include edited volumes on care in teacher education post-COVID-19 and teacher representations in media. She has published extensively on topics like technology integration in ELA classrooms, culturally responsive pedagogy, and teacher induction programs.
Dr. Shoffner’s awards include a Fulbright Scholarship in Romania. Her teaching spans ELA methods, curriculum theory, and student teaching internships, alongside an English course on resistance and power. She advocates for empathy-driven pedagogy and has explored the intersection of technology and reflective practice since the early 2000s.
