Dr. Melanie S. Gustafson is a Professor in the Department of History at the University of Vermont, serving as Coordinator of Transfer Affairs and Study Abroad. Her expertise spans U.S. social history, women's history, and gender politics. She holds a Ph.D. from New York University (1993). Her research examines women’s political inclusion struggles and evolving gender roles’ impact on democratic citizenship.
Key publications include Women and the Republican Party, 1854–1924 and the co-authored We Have Come to Stay: American Women and Political Parties, 1880–1960. She collaborates on digital initiatives like Omeka exhibits showcasing student research and leads Clio Visualizing History’s projects, such as Click! The Ongoing Feminist Revolution.
Dr. Gustafson has held leadership roles with the New England Historical Association, the Journal of the Gilded Age and Progressive Era, and the U.S. Civil Rights Commission. She currently serves as Vice-President of Clio Visualizing History, advancing public digital history.
