Melanie Rug is a research-active faculty member at the Australian National University (ANU), affiliated with the Centre for Advanced Microscopy. Her research spans parasitology, cell biology, and advanced imaging techniques, with a primary focus on Plasmodium falciparum and host-pathogen interactions.
Research Focus: Her work delves into the intricate biology of malaria parasites, erythrocyte dynamics, and the application of cutting-edge microscopy methods. Key areas include lipid droplet dynamics in parasite development, platelet-mediated erythrocyte clearance, and the structural biology of drug-resistant pathogens like Candida albicans.
Publications & Trends: From 2004 to 2024, she has authored 35 research outputs, including high-impact articles in Trends in Parasitology, Journal of Cell Science, and Blood. Recent works emphasize innovative parasitology education, advanced microscopy applications, and immunological responses to infection.
Projects & Collaborations: She has led or co-led 4 major projects, including the Microscopy Australia initiative (2007–2028) and the Leica Stellaris 8 Platform for super-resolution microscopy (2022). These projects underscore her commitment to advancing biological imaging and interdisciplinary research.
Student Supervision: Registered to supervise research students, contributing to the next generation of scientists in parasitology and microscopy.
