Dr. Melanie R. Mormile is a Professor of Biological Sciences at Missouri University of Science and Technology. She joined Missouri S&T in 1999 as an Assistant Professor after completing post-doctoral work at Pacific Northwest National Lab. Her research focuses on environmental microbiology, particularly extremophilic microorganisms in hypersaline and extreme pH environments, with applications in astrobiology, bioenergy production, and bioremediation.
- Ph.D. in Microbiology, University of Oklahoma (1995)
- M.S. in Biological Sciences, University of Louisville (1988)
- B.S. in Biological Sciences, University of Cincinnati (1985)
Her work spans astrobiological implications for Mars through acid saline lake studies, industrial applications of halophiles, and antibiotic resistance ecology. Recent publications highlight microbial energy pathways and biosignature preservation in extreme environments. She holds three patents related to biohydrogen and propanediol production under haloalkaline conditions.
She serves as faculty advisor for the Mars Rover Design Team since 2012 and teaches courses from introductory biology to graduate bioremediation. Her affiliations include American Society for Microbiology and American Chemical Society memberships.
