Melanie Nicol

Melanie Nicol, PharmD, PhD, is an Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Minnesota's College of Pharmacy. Her research focuses on the efficacy of antivirals and anti-infectives in tissue compartments, particularly for HIV treatment and prophylaxis.

The Nicol Research Lab employs translational approaches spanning in vitro, ex vivo, and clinical studies to investigate drug penetration into tissue compartments like the genitals, brain, and lymph tissue. Active projects in Minnesota and Kampala, Uganda emphasize understanding factors modulating drug efficacy for HIV prophylaxis, viral suppression, and reservoir eradication.

Research efforts address critical gaps in tissue pharmacology, aiming to improve therapeutic outcomes for infectious diseases through interdisciplinary collaboration and innovative pharmacokinetic modeling.
