Prof. Dr. Melanie Moeller is a Professor of Classical Philology at Freie Universität Berlin, affiliated with the Department of Philosophy and Humanities and the Institute of Greek and Latin Philology. Her academic journey includes a PhD from Universität Bielefeld (2002), habilitation at Universität Heidelberg (2009), and extensive teaching roles across Germany. She leads research on Latin literature, rhetoric, and classical reception, with international collaborations in Brazil and Europe.
Her research explores the interplay of rhetoric, hermeneutics, and literary theory in ancient texts, focusing on authors like Ovid, Virgil, and Cicero. She investigates myth reception, philological methodologies, and the ethical dimensions of classical literature in modern contexts. Recent works analyze rhetorical strategies in Augustan poetry and the epistemological role of anecdotes in ancient biography.
Moeller's publications reflect a strong emphasis on theoretical philology, classical reception in media, and the politics of literary interpretation. Her 2024 monograph, Der entmündigte Leser, critiques contemporary reading practices, while earlier books address Homer, Ovid, and rhetoric. She has received the Heisenberg Research Fellowship and contributes to projects like the DFG research group on historical ontology and the Excellence Cluster 'Temporal Communities'.
Scientific awards include the Heisenberg Fellowship (2012) for her project on philosopher Hans Blumenberg. She directs doctoral candidates in the 'Ancient Languages and Texts' program and collaborates with the Center for Modern Greece (CeMoG). Moeller frequently engages in public discourse through media interviews, podcasts, and literary critiques, advocating for classical humanities in modern education.
