Melanie J. Bell is a Professor of Quantitative Linguistics at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), based in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities, Education and Social Sciences within the Humanities and Social Sciences School. Her research focuses on compound nouns, phonetics, language acquisition, and the mental lexicon. She holds a PhD in English and Applied Linguistics from the University of Cambridge, complemented by an MPhil and BA in Natural Sciences from the same institution.
Key areas of expertise include the interplay between pronunciation and meaning, second language acquisition, and empirical methods like corpus linguistics and computational modeling. She has secured significant grants, including a Mercator Fellowship (2015–2018) for phonetic studies of complex words and a Marie Curie Research Fellowship (2017–2018) for exploring compound interpretation. Recent work involves collaboration with international teams, such as projects with the University of Tübingen on language learning challenges posed by homophones.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on phonetics, research methods, and applied linguistics. She actively supervises MA and PhD students in linguistics and language education, emphasizing empirical and quantitative approaches. As a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, she advocates for innovative teaching methods in higher education.
