Sarah Etchells is an Associate Professor in Linguistics and Course Leader for the BA (Hons) English Language and Linguistics at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU). She is affiliated with the Faculty of Arts, Humanities, Education and Social Sciences, within the Humanities and Social Sciences School. Her research focuses on semantics, sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, and pedagogy, with particular interests in second language acquisition, motivation, age factors in language learning, and intercultural issues in higher education.
Before joining ARU, she taught syntax and grammar at the British Institute in Rome and in Vicenza, Italy. She holds a first degree in music, exploring connections between music and language. Her qualifications include an MA in Applied Linguistics, CELTA/DELTA teaching certifications, and a Graduate Diploma in Music.
She supervises research in areas such as the impact of English cultural contexts on Arabic students in the UK, social media language dynamics, and classroom pedagogy. She serves as an external examiner for programs at UCCLES and the University of Bedfordshire’s MA TESOL. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
