Melanie Griffiths

Dr Melanie Griffiths is a Birmingham Fellow at the University of Birmingham’s School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences, specializing in mobility and UK immigration enforcement. She holds a BA (Oxon), MA, and DPhil. Her research focuses on deportation, the ‘hostile environment’ under Brexit, and mixed-immigration status families.

Education: BA (Oxon), MA, DPhil (Oxford). Previous roles include ESRC Future Research Leaders grant holder at Bristol University and Associate Research Fellow at Exeter University.

Research interests include migration governance, immigration detention, Article 8 rights, gender, masculinity, legal bureaucracies, and temporal dynamics in migration policy. She chairs Open Door (Oxford) and serves on Asylum Welcome’s management committee.

Publications emphasize themes like immigration enforcement mechanisms, emotional dimensions of policy, and legal geographies of asylum. Grants include ESRC-funded work on mixed-status families. Engaged in NGO advocacy through roles in Open Door and Detention Forum.
