Dr. Melanie Beese serves as the Custodian of the Department of German as a Second and Foreign Language (DaZ/DaF) at the University of Duisburg-Essen, within the Faculty of Humanities. She has been a Research Associate in the ProDaZ project (German as a Second Language in all Subjects) since March 2010 and assumed her custodianship role at the DaZ/DaF Institute in June 2013 following the completion of her dissertation.
Her research focuses on several key areas within language education:
- Interaction possibilities for subject-specific and language learning in chemistry lessons
- Development of subject-specific writing skills, particularly text types in science teaching and operators
- Effectiveness of scientific language education and language support measures in secondary schools
Dr. Beese's academic journey includes teacher training in chemistry, biology and German, followed by lecturing positions in German Studies at the University of Duisburg-Essen from 2007-2010. She earned additional qualification in German as a second language and intercultural education in October 2010, and completed her dissertation in June 2013 on 'Münchhausen's Wonderful Scientific Adventures on Water and in the Air and How He Told Them. A Literary and Scientific-Historical Study of the 'Münchhauseniads' of Rudolf Erich Raspe and Gottfried August Bürger.'
Her work is conducted through the Institute for Subject-Oriented Language Education and Multilingualism (IfSM) where she contributes to advancing methodologies in teaching German to non-native speakers across various academic disciplines.
