Damaris Borowski is an Assistant Professor for German as a Foreign and Second Language at the Faculty of Linguistics and Literature at Bielefeld University since July 2022. She holds a PhD from Bielefeld University (2018) with a dissertation on linguistic challenges faced by foreign anesthesiologists during informed consent discussions. Her academic journey includes positions at Tübingen School of Education (2019-2022), University of Münster (2013-2019), and teaching roles in various German language programs for medical professionals and immigrants.
Her research focuses on the professionalization of teachers for multilingualism in schools, particularly examining beliefs about multilingualism as part of professional DaZ (German as a Second Language) competence. She also investigates occupation-related German language teaching, with current projects examining linguistic requirements in German pharmacies and pre-operative communication in neurology clinics. Her work integrates conversation analysis and error analysis to develop practical language teaching materials for professional contexts.
Borowski leads multiple research projects including BeliefsMatter (2020-present) on teacher beliefs about multilingualism, GidA (2023-present) studying conversations in German pharmacies, PONC (2025-present) examining pre-operative communication, and developing an AI chatbot for language learning support. Her publications and presentations consistently address the intersection of language education, professional communication, and multilingualism in educational and medical settings.
Among her scientific contributions are publications in journals and edited volumes addressing language-related beliefs in teacher education, educational success in multilingual schools, and language challenges in medical contexts. Her research demonstrates a strong commitment to bridging theoretical linguistic insights with practical language teaching applications.
As an educator, Borowski serves as coordinator of the DaF Master's program at Bielefeld University and the international DaF double master's program. She is actively involved in teacher training initiatives and has developed continuing education programs for language teachers in vocational language courses. Her work extends to multiple institutional roles including membership on the Habilitation Committee and the Board of the Specialized Language Center.
