Dr. Mela Sarkar is an Associate Professor in the Department of Integrated Studies in Education (DISE) at McGill University's Faculty of Education. She holds a Ph.D. from Concordia University (2000), with prior degrees from McGill and Concordia. Her research focuses on critical sociolinguistics, Indigenous language revitalization, and second language pedagogy, emphasizing marginalized communities' communicative practices. She has been actively involved with the BILD/LIDA research community since 2014, curating its blog and advising the J-BILD journal.

Dr. Sarkar’s research has been published in journals like the Canadian Modern Language Review, Journal of Language, Identity and Education, and International Journal of Qualitative Methods. She advocates for pedagogical innovation that centers marginalized voices in academic publishing and curriculum design.
