Mel Ziman is an Honorary Professor in the School of Medical and Health Sciences at Edith Cowan University (ECU), where she has built a distinguished academic career spanning over two decades. Her journey at ECU progressed from Lecturer (2001-2003) to Senior Lecturer (2003-2005), Associate Professor (2005-2013), Professor (2013-2020), and currently Honorary Professor (2020-present). Professor Ziman earned her Bachelor of Science Honours and Doctor of Philosophy from institutions in South Africa, completing her PhD in 1983. Her educational foundation has enabled her extensive research career focused on developmental genetics and its applications to human disease.
Her research program bridges basic science with clinical applications, investigating how developmental genes like PAX3/PAX7 contribute to cutaneous malignant melanoma and neurodegenerative conditions such as Huntington's disease.
