Professor Mel Bunce is a prominent academic and researcher in journalism and media studies, currently serving as Deputy Dean of the School of Communication & Creativity at City, University of London. She previously led the renowned Department of Journalism, achieving top UK rankings. Her research focuses on journalism's role in democracy, media freedom, and international journalism, with notable publications like Capturing News, Capturing Democracy (2024) and Africa's Media Image in the 21st Century (2016).
Education: DPhil in Politics (University of Oxford, 2013), MPhil in Development Studies (Oxford, 2013), BA (Hons) in Political Science & English (University of Otago, 2000). She is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Research Interests: Her work examines media freedom campaigns, humanitarian journalism, and the evolving global media landscape.
