Meint Smit

Meint Smit is a Full Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology, where he leads the Photonic Integration group at the COBRA Research Institute. His pioneering research focuses on developing Generic Integration Technology for photonics.

Professor Smit's innovations include creating open-access integration technology platforms for InP and Silicon Photonics, and methods for building photonic circuits in Indium Phosphide layers on silicon wafers. His current research advances photonic integrated circuits for applications in telecommunications, sensing, and computing.

He has made fundamental contributions to photonics including inventing the Arrayed Waveguide Grating, for which he received the LEOS Technical Achievement Award.
