Dr. Meiling Wu is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Modern Languages and Literature (MLL) at California State University, East Bay (CSUEB). She also serves as co-Chair of the Department of Writing, Language, and Literature (WLL). Her leadership spans multiple roles, including Director and Principal Investigator of the Student Service Operation for Success, a federal AANAPISI grant (1.85M USD) funded by the U.S. Department of Education. She has secured additional grants, including a 1.75M USD Part F AANAPISI grant for the Trans-APASS program and a sub-award from the CSU Strategic Language Institute for Pashto and Dari programs. She established the Japanese Language and Culture Minor and secured funding for Korean language and culture courses.
Her academic background includes a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from SUNY Binghamton. Her research focuses on East Asian languages, cultures, cinema, and literature, informed by her multilingual upbringing and family's international business ties. She has been actively involved in scholarly and social initiatives addressing colonialism, globalization, and equity.
Dr. Wu is a key governance figure, serving as Statewide Senator of the CSU Academic Senate, chairing committees like the Committee on Budget and Resource Allocation (COBRA), and participating in the CSU Academic Council on International Programs (ACIP). She co-founded the Asian/Pacific Islander Faculty and Staff Association and played a pivotal role in establishing CSUEB's Asian American Pacific Islander Student Success Center.
