Meilin Liu is Regents' Professor and Hightower Chair in Materials Science and Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology, College of Engineering. His primary research focuses on design, fabrication, in situ characterization, and simulation of materials for energy storage and conversion including fuel cells, batteries, electrolyzers, and membrane reactors. With over 680 publications in prestigious journals and 33 U.S. patents, his work emphasizes understanding structure-property relationships in electrochemical systems.
Dr. Liu's research interests span materials science, electrochemistry, energy storage, and nanomaterials. His group studies transport phenomena in ionic conductors, develops novel electrode materials, and employs operando characterization techniques to optimize energy conversion processes. Recent work explores proton-conducting ceramics, high-entropy materials for batteries, and electrocatalysts for sustainable energy.
His scientific contributions have been recognized through numerous honors including election as Fellow of the European Academy of Sciences (2024) and consistent designation as Highly Cited Researcher since 2018. He has mentored approximately 100 postdoctoral and PhD students, with 30 former students holding faculty positions globally, and co-founded PolyPlus Battery Company.
Liu leads the Functional Ceramics and Batteries Technology Lab, developing solid oxide cells, advanced battery systems, and membrane reactor technologies. His interdisciplinary approach bridges fundamental materials science with practical energy solutions.
