معرفی
Professor Meike Wittmann leads the Theoretical Biology research group at Bielefeld University's Faculty of Biology, where she has been since 2017, first as a Junior Professor and since 2023 as a full Professor. She is actively involved in multiple research initiatives including the CRC Transregio 212 on Individualization across Behavior, Ecology and Evolution, the DFG Research Group FOR 3000 on plant chemodiversity, and the Joint Institute for Individualization in a Changing Environment (JICE). She also serves as deputy chair of the Doctoral Committee and as Library Representative for the Faculty of Biology.
- Bachelor in Biology from Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (2008)
- Master in Ecology, Evolution and Systematics (EES) from LMU Munich (2010)
- PhD in Biology from LMU Munich (2014)
- Postdoctoral research at Stanford (CEHG) and University of Vienna (FWF Lise-Meitner fellowship)
Professor Wittmann's research focuses on understanding the causes and consequences of individual variation in populations through mathematical modeling and computer simulations. Her work spans phenotypic, genetic, and chemical diversity, examining how these variations affect eco-evolutionary dynamics, particularly in changing environments. She specializes in studying small population dynamics and the consequences of fluctuating environmental conditions on evolutionary processes.
Her recent publications reveal a strong trend toward interdisciplinary research at the intersection of ecology, evolution, and mathematical modeling. The work spans from theoretical frameworks examining individualized niches to applied research on plant chemodiversity and conservation biology. A significant portion of her research addresses how individual variation influences population dynamics, species interactions, and responses to environmental change, with increasing emphasis on quantitative modeling approaches to traditional ecological questions.
- Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes scholarship for PhD research
- Center for Computational, Evolutionary, and Human Genomics (CEHG) postdoc scholarship
- Lise-Meitner postdoc scholarship from Austrian Science Fund (FWF)
- Associate Editor of the journal Oikos
Professor Wittmann leads a research group focused on theoretical biology and mathematical modeling within Bielefeld University's Faculty of Biology. She is actively involved in multiple collaborative research projects including the SFB-TRR 212, FOR 3000, and the InChangE consortium, which examine individual variation across biological scales. Her research team develops individual-based computer simulations to study eco-evolutionary dynamics, with particular focus on how intraspecific variation affects population responses to environmental change.
