Prof. Dr. Caroline Müller is a full professor at the Faculty of Biology, University of Bielefeld, specializing in Chemical Ecology. She leads multiple DFG-funded projects, including the DFG Research Group FOR 3000 on intraspecific plant chemodiversity and serves as Subproject Manager B02 in the SFB/Transregio 212 NC³ consortium. Her roles include membership in the Faculty Conference and co-editorship of ecological journals.
- Key Research Areas: Plant-insect interactions, chemodiversity ecology/evolution, environmental stress responses, and niche construction.
- Awards: ISCE Silverstein-Simeone Award (2025).
- Methodologies: Metabolomics, chemical ecology, insect behavior experiments, and ecological modeling.
Scientific Trends in her work include: (1) Chemodiversity as a driver of plant-insect dynamics, (2) Stressor interactions (drought, insecticides) shaping herbivore-predator relationships, (3) Quantitative models for chemodiversity evolution, and (4) Cross-trophic impacts of plant chemical phenotypes. Her 15 most recent publications span journals like Plant Biology, Oecologia, and Proceedings of the Royal Society B, with keywords bridging Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, and Metabolomics.
Scientific Contributions include: (1) Demonstrating how plant chemodiversity mediates aphid-pollinator trade-offs, (2) Characterizing pharmacophagy in sawflies as a defense mechanism, (3) Investigating microplastic impacts on cabbage physiology, and (4) Developing predictive metabolomic frameworks for plant chemical profiles. She also contributes to Basic and Applied Ecology as an editor and leads the JICE - Joint Institute for Individualization in a Changing Environment.
