Sonja Meier is a Professor of Private and Comparative Law and Director of the Institute of Comparative and International Private Law at the University of Freiburg. Previously, she held academic positions including Professor of Private Law and European Legal History at the University of Marburg and Senior Researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law. She earned her doctoral degree from the University of Regensburg with a dissertation on English unjust enrichment law, followed by habilitation on plurality of debtors in historical contexts.
Her research focuses on comparative private law, German private law, and legal history, particularly exploring obligations law, unjust enrichment, and creditor/debtor dynamics. Notable honors include Bavaria's Award for Good Teaching (2002) and the Kulturförderpreis Ostbayern (1998).
Her publications span over three decades, addressing topics like restitution principles, European contract law harmonization, and historical legal frameworks. She has contributed to leading legal commentaries such as the Handwörterbuch des Europäischen Privatrechts and the Unidroit Principles of International Commercial Contracts.
