Mei Li is an Associate Professor in the Department of Economics and Finance at the University of Guelph, affiliated with the Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics. Her research focuses on international finance, banking, financial stability, and macroeconomics. She earned her BA and MA in International Economics from Wuhan University and her MA and PhD in Economics from Queen's University.
Dr. Li's current research explores BigTechs in financial intermediation, central bank digital currency, and systemic risk. Her work emphasizes regulatory frameworks for BigTech firms, demonstrating how information asymmetries influence risk-taking behaviors. She has published in leading journals like the Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking, and the Canadian Journal of Economics.
Her academic contributions include analyzing currency attacks, lender of last resort policies, and the renminbi appreciation path. She co-authored influential papers on capital regulation for BigTechs and the signaling effects of central bank interventions during crises.
