Dr. Mei He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutics at the University of Florida’s College of Pharmacy. Her research focuses on extracellular vesicles (EVs) and exosomes for precision medicine, including therapeutic delivery and biomarker discovery. She leads the He Lab, which integrates microfluidics, nanotechnology, and AI to advance EV-based solutions for cancer immunotherapy, regenerative medicine, and overcoming biological barriers. Dr. He is a senior member of the National Academy of Inventors and serves on editorial and advisory boards for journals like Pharmaceutics and Lab on a Chip.
Education:
- Ph.D., Chemistry, University of California-Berkeley (2008)
- B.S., Chemical Engineering, Chongqing University, China (2000)
Research Interests: Dr. He’s work combines EV engineering with advanced fabrication techniques like 3D printing and microfluidics. Her lab develops exosome-based platforms for targeted drug delivery, CRISPR gene therapy, and diagnostics. Notable innovations include the ExoRelease kit for EV isolation and ExoDeL Inc. for CRISPR delivery systems. Her research has led to over 20 patents, $7M+ in NIH grants, and recognition such as the NIH Maximizing Investigator’s Research Award (2019) and LOC Emerging Investigator Award (2019).
Grants & Funding: Recent grants include NIH NIGMS funding for studying EV trafficking mechanisms (2025) and Air Force funding for microbial biomanufacturing (2024). Her work has also been supported by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America.
Lab & Collaborations: The He Lab collaborates with industry partners like InnovaPrep and focuses on translational research. They emphasize training students in EV engineering through programs like UF’s SURF initiative. Dr. He also mentors startups like Clara Biotech (acquired in 2023) and ExoDeL Inc., advancing EV-based therapies into clinical applications.
