Mehmet Efe BİRESSELİOĞLU

Prof. Mehmet Efe BİRESSELİOĞLU is a Professor of Energy Policy in the Department of Political Science and International Relations at Izmir University of Economics (IUE), where he also serves as the Institute Director of the Graduate School, Head of the Sustainable Energy Division, and founding Dean of the Graduate School. He holds a PhD from IMT School for Advanced Studies Lucca, an MA in European Studies from the University of Turku, and a BA in Political Science from Bilkent University.

His research focuses on energy security, policy analysis, and the social dimensions of energy transitions. Notable contributions include examining energy policy-making frameworks, assessing the impact of political and technological shifts on energy systems, and analyzing Turkey’s role in regional and global energy dynamics. He has coordinated or participated in numerous EU Horizon 2020 projects (e.g., ECHOES, EERADATA) and international research initiatives.

Prof. BİRESSELİOĞLU has authored/co-authored over 30 peer-reviewed articles in journals like Energy Policy, Nature Scientific Reports, and Energy Research & Social Science. His books include European Energy Security: Turkey’s Future Role and Impact (Palgrave Macmillan, 2011) and edited volumes on energy policy challenges. He currently serves as an Associate Editor for Frontiers in Environmental Psychology.

• Awards: TÜBİTAK Young Scientist Incentive Award (2020), TÜBİTAK ULAKBIM International Scientific Publication Awards (2012-2013).
• Administrative Roles: Institute Director (Graduate School, IUE since 2019), Head of Sustainable Energy Division (since 2011), and Management Board Member of EERA’s Joint Programme on Energy Policy Impacts.
• Professional Activities: Visiting Lecturer at universities in the Netherlands, Denmark, Hungary, Italy, and Portugal; former Sr. Research Fellow at the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs.

His advisory work includes guiding 3 master’s theses on topics like Eastern Mediterranean gas diplomacy and Arctic energy futures. He has led projects funded by the Norwegian Research Council, TÜBİTAK, and international organizations like NATO and the World Bank.
