Dr. Mehdi Sajid is Assistant Professor of Arabic and Islamic Studies at Utrecht University's Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies since 2018. Previously, he worked as a Research Assistant at the University of Osnabrück (2017-2018), Postdoctoral Researcher at Utrecht University (2014-2017), and Assistant Researcher at the University of Bonn (2010-2014).
He obtained his MA (2008) and PhD (2015) in Islamic Studies and Philosophy from the University of Bonn, with a dissertation on 'Muslims in Interwar Europe and the Deconstruction of the Fascination with the West.' His current project explores the historical development of 'Moroccan Islam' across pre-modern and modern periods.
Research interests span Islamic intellectual history, East-West encounters, religious reformism, and transcultural dynamics, particularly in interwar Europe. His 15 most recent publications (2013-2023) focus on Christian-Muslim relations, Sufism, postcolonial thought, and Islamic modernity, reflecting themes like colonial resistance, mystical knowledge, and doctrinal evolution.
He teaches courses including 'Islam, a Living Tradition,' 'Radicalism: Beliefs and Conspiracies,' and 'Religions, Body, and Gender in the Public Domain.'
