Meghan McCarroll is an Assistant Professor at the University of Colorado Boulder's Environmental Studies department, where she teaches courses like Scientific Basis for Environmental Change, Communicating for Sustainability and Impact, and GIS for Sustainability Professionals. Her research focuses on water literacy as a tool for sustainable water management, informed by fieldwork in Aurora, Colorado and Cape Town, South Africa. She employs mixed methods including GIS, photovoice, and community surveys to bridge academic research with municipal planning.
Her educational background includes a PhD in Environmental Science from the University of Denver, an MSc in Integrated Water Management from the University of Queensland, and a BA in Environmental Studies from CU Boulder. Professional experience spans water quality monitoring in Boston, wastewater operations in Denver, and mine discharge remediation in the Rockies.
McCarroll's research interests emphasize community engagement in water governance, with publications on interdisciplinary frameworks for water literacy. Her 2020 Water article proposes a holistic model for assessing public knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors around water systems. She also developed an interactive StoryMap to enhance policy dialogues using student-generated photovoice data.
- Key scientific awards: Community Engaged Fellow (University of Denver, 2019-2022)
As an educator, she has taught geography and environmental courses at both CU Boulder and the University of Denver, including travel classes on South Florida sustainability and South African water security.
