Meghan Burchell

Meghan Burchell is an Associate Professor and Acting Associate Dean (Research) in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Memorial University. Her research integrates archaeology with scientific methods to examine long-term human-environment interactions in coastal regions.

Research interests focus on:

• Reconstructing past environments through biogeochemical proxies
• Analyzing archaeological shell middens using sclerochronology
• Documenting historical human adaptations to coastal ecosystems
• Investigating climate impacts on marine resource availability

Methodologically, her work employs stable isotope analysis, radiocarbon dating, and growth pattern analysis of marine organisms to develop high-resolution environmental records.

Field investigations span coastal regions including British Columbia, Newfoundland, and the Arctic, examining human settlement patterns and subsistence strategies across millennia.

Dr. Burchell maintains active field research programs and laboratory facilities for archaeological science at Memorial University.
