Megan Ranney is an Adjunct Professor of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Warren Alpert Endowed Professor of Emergency Medicine at Brown University. She serves as Deputy Dean of the School of Public Health and Founding Director of the Brown-Lifespan Center for Digital Health. Her research focuses on digital health innovations, violence prevention, and firearm injury reduction. She co-founded AFFIRM at the Aspen Institute and GetUsPPE.org, addressing firearm-related injuries and PPE distribution during crises.
Education: BA in History of Science (Harvard, 1997), MD (Columbia, 2004), MPH (Brown, 2010). She completed residency and chief residency in Emergency Medicine at Brown, alongside a fellowship in Injury Prevention Research. Notable roles include Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians and member of the Aspen Global Leadership Network.
Research interests include leveraging technology for behavioral health interventions, firearm safety, and emergency department-based prevention strategies. Key projects involve mobile health (mHealth), lethal means counseling, and opioid use disorder management. She leads studies on youth violence prevention and has developed text-message-based interventions for adolescents.
Her 15 most recent articles (2020–2019) emphasize digital health solutions, firearm injury prevention, and mental health interventions. Awards include the 2021 Rhode Island Woman of the Year and 2019 ACEP Policy Pioneer Award. She has secured funding for over a dozen federal grants, focusing on technology-driven interventions for high-risk populations.
Leadership roles include Editor of Annals of Emergency Medicine, Board Member of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine, and chair of multiple firearm injury prevention committees. She mentors researchers and teaches digital health electives, emphasizing innovation in healthcare delivery and public health policy.
