Megan McAlpin serves as a Clinical Professor at the University of Oregon School of Law, where she has been a faculty member since 2006. Her primary affiliation is with the Legal Research and Writing Center, and she previously directed Oregon Law’s Academic Excellence Program from 2018 to 2023, receiving the school’s highest service honor for her innovative contributions to student success initiatives.
Professor McAlpin specializes in legal writing pedagogy and academic support systems for law students. Her research focuses on practical editing methodologies for legal documents, as evidenced by her authoritative book Beyond the First Draft: Editing Strategies for Powerful Legal Writing (2nd ed., 2023), which addresses critical gaps in legal education through structured writing refinement techniques and real-world application exercises.
Her professional recognition includes Oregon Law’s Meritorious Service Award, and she has held significant national leadership roles including past president of the Association of Legal Writing Directors (ALWD). Additional honors encompass editorial board service for The Journal of the Legal Writing Institute and mentorship in ALWD’s Leadership Academy.
Professor McAlpin actively shapes legal education through her directorship of the Academic Excellence Program and ongoing work with the Legal Research and Writing Center, where she develops curriculum frameworks and supports student writing development across the law school’s degree programs.
