Megan Marshall is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian Studies at the University of Chicago, where she coordinates the Spanish as a Heritage Language program. She holds a PhD candidate status in Hispanic and Italian Studies at the University of Illinois in Chicago, nearing completion of her thesis on linguistic investment and social networks in Spanish maintenance and acquisition.
Her research focuses on bilingual language development, heritage language maintenance, instruction and assessment, linguistic investment, and linguistic social networks. She emphasizes the role of language in individual and community identity, advocating for authentic connections to Spanish-speaking cultures through communication-focused pedagogy.
Recent publications highlight her work on heritage language education, critical pedagogy, and the interplay of sociolinguistic factors in language acquisition. Her courses include curriculum design for heritage speakers, academic writing, and discourse analysis.
