Megan Campbell is a Doctoral Researcher at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, affiliated with the Dynamics of the Ocean Floor Research Division and Marine Geodynamics Research Unit. She has been working since November 2022 on the Helmholtz Young Investigator Group project "Do volcanoes collapse retrogressively?" led by Principal Investigator Morelia Urlaub, focusing on volcanic deformation processes and hazard assessment.
Her educational background includes an MEarthPhys in Geophysics and Geology from the University of Edinburgh (2017-2022), with a bachelor's project on seismotectonics of subduction zones (Aegean and Sumatran arcs) and a master's project analyzing pre- and post-eruptive deformation at Fernandina volcano in the Galapagos Islands to characterize its magmatic plumbing system.
Dr. Campbell's research integrates geodetic methods to study volcano deformation, volcanic and marine hazard risk mitigation, and broader geodynamic processes. She actively participates in field expeditions, including RV Maria S. Merian (2024-2025) in the Aegean Sea for ocean bottom seismometer deployments and RV Meteor (2024) in the Ionian Sea for gravity coring and rock dredging, while maintaining a strong commitment to science communication and public outreach.
Funded by the Helmholtz Young Investigator Group grant, she operates within GEOMAR's Marine Geodynamics team, which investigates ocean floor dynamics through magmatic and hydrothermal systems research. Her work contributes to GEOMAR's core themes in seafloor hazards and benefits under the institutional strategy "Changing Earth – Sustaining our Future".
