Dr. Meena Bansal is an Associate Professor in Medicine (Liver Diseases) at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She holds multiple leadership roles: Director of Translational Research in the Division of Liver Diseases, former Transplant Hepatology Fellowship Director, and serves as Chief Medical Officer of Mount Sinai Care LLC and Deputy Chief Medical Officer for Mount Sinai Health Partners. Her primary affiliations include the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and The Tisch Cancer Institute.
Dr. Bansal completed her Gastroenterology Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania before joining Mount Sinai in 2001. Her research focuses on molecular mechanisms of liver fibrosis/cirrhosis, novel anti-fibrotic therapies, HIV-associated hepatic inflammation, and NASH treatments. She leads NIH-funded studies and multiple clinical trials for Hepatitis C and NASH. Notably, she co-founded the Mount Sinai Institute for Liver Research to advance liver disease research and treatment.
Her recent work emphasizes environmental factors in liver disease, including heavy metal exposure and toxin impacts on fibrosis. Over 69 publications highlight her contributions to hepatology, with recent articles addressing MASLD awareness, imaging innovations, and environmental risk factors. She has been featured in 32 media outlets for her leadership and research impact.
Dr. Bansal’s population health efforts bridge clinical research and healthcare systems, addressing evolving challenges in liver disease management through translational medicine and policy initiatives.
