Małgorzata Rygielska is an Associate Professor in the Institute of Culture Studies at the Faculty of Humanities, University of Silesia in Katowice, where she has been actively contributing to academic research and teaching. She holds a PhD (2007) and habilitation (2020), both from the University of Silesia, with a focus on cultural studies and literary anthropology.
Her research interests include theories of culture, cultural history of Europe and Poland, anthropology of literature, and the cultural history of medicine. She explores interdisciplinary themes such as sensory heritage, Ignatian spirituality, migration, and historical concepts of culture. Her recent publications analyze olfactory heritage, Jesuit ethnography, Enlightenment thought, and post-Brexit literary expressions.
Her scholarly work demonstrates a consistent engagement with cultural theory, historical analysis, and anthropological perspectives. She has participated in national research projects, including the edition of Julian Przyboś’s scattered texts, and contributed to the 'Academization of the City' project. Her publications span journals in cultural studies, ethnography, and literary analysis, reflecting both Polish and international academic engagement.
She is actively involved in academic service, serving on the scientific council of 'Laboratorium Kultury' and the editorial board of 'Loci Communes'. She also participated in the Oxford-based 'Virus of Hate Zoom Workshop' in 2021, presenting on antidotes to hatred.
