Maya Nadkarni is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at Swarthmore College, affiliated with the Film & Media Studies Program, Gender & Sexuality Studies Program, Interpretation Theory cluster, and the Mellon Mays Education Program. She holds a Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology from Columbia University (2009) and an A.B. in Social Anthropology from Harvard University (1992).

Her research examines postsocialist Hungary, focusing on memory politics, state secrecy, and historical subjectivity. She is currently investigating debates over communist-era state security archives, drawing on ethnographic and archival methods. Her 2020 book Remains of Socialism analyzes socialist-era material remnants and cultural ambivalence.

Dr. Nadkarni teaches courses on political anthropology, visual anthropology, cultural memory, and gender studies. She maintains office hours on Wednesdays and Thursdays and is actively engaged in research connecting archival access, artistic production, and political debates in Eastern Europe.
