Maya Ellen Hertz is a Research Fellow at the MOBILE Center of Excellence for Global Mobility Law within the Faculty of Law at the University of Copenhagen. Her work bridges refugee law, evidence studies, critical data studies, and legal decision-making.
- Education: MSc in Social Data Science (University of Copenhagen), BA in Psychology and Gender & Sexuality Studies (Barnard College, Columbia University)
- Current Role: PhD Fellow and course coordinator for Gender, Law and Legal Culture (Fall 2025)
- Collaborations: Visiting researcher at Åbo Akademi University (2025), active in Danish asylum system research
Her research focuses on the use of social media as evidence in refugee status determination and the role of credibility assessments in asylum decisions. She contributes to the XAI-CRED project under Professor Thomas Gammeltoft-Hansen.
Maya has presented at international events like Trans 'Enough' for Protection? (2024) and Recognising Refugees (2025). Her teaching experience includes Data Governance: Law, Ethics and Politics and Artificial Intelligence and Legal Disruption.
