May-Len Skilbrei is a Professor at the Department of Criminology and Sociology of Law, University of Oslo, specializing in gender, sexuality, migration, and violence. Her research spans empirical studies on prostitution, human trafficking, sexual violence, and migration policies in Norway, Sweden, Estonia, and Russia.
- Current Project: Medical, legal and lay understandings of physical evidence in rape cases (2019-2024, funded by UiO:Life Science).
- Leadership Roles: Board Head at the Centre for Gender Research (2020-2024), former NESH member (2014-2021), Vice-chair of COST Action on European Prostitution Policies (2013-2017), and Eastbordnet management committee (2009-2013).
Research Themes: Skilbrei’s work synthesizes ethnography with mixed methods to explore how societal power structures shape policies and lived experiences. Key areas include gender norms in legal systems, the medicalization of sexual violence, and the interplay between migration control and human trafficking.
Teaching: She instructs on criminological theory, qualitative methods, and gender/sexuality in violence contexts, supervising MA and PhD students in related fields.
Affiliations: Member of research groups Knowledge in Translation, Migration Law, MEDRA, and thematic networks on migration and criminological theory.
