Dr. Maxine Newlands is a Senior Lecturer in Political Science and International Relations at James Cook University's School of Social Science. She holds a BA (Hons), MA, and PhD, with a focus on environmental politics and media, and has been affiliated with JCU since completing her PhD in 2013.
Research Interests: Maxine investigates how environmental politics and communication networks influence policymaking. Her work emphasizes governance improvements, social justice, and the role of media in political processes. She combines expertise in political science, international relations, and policy analysis to advise federal/state governments and industries on world-leading projects.

Professional Background: Prior to academia, Maxine worked as a broadcast journalist for the BBC and commercial radio. She continues contributing to the Ecologist magazine and serves as a political commentator for Australian and international media.
